It’s no secret that frontliners are among the hardest hit by the pandemic. Amid real risks of contracting COVID and neverending issues with quarantine restrictions, frontline workers like drivers, fast food workers, delivery drivers, barangay officials, and medical professionals, still need to deal with these challenges, so they can serve and get by.
Heaven’s Touch Cuisine, Asturias, a well-loved carinderia in Sampaloc is making the rounds on social media and TV for its crisis initiatives. Heaven’s Touch has been constantly holding food drives since 2020, distributing food packs to those afflicted by calamity and poverty, as well as frontliners.
Creating a difference
The HT food drive kicked off even before COVID hit the Philippines. When it did, the Piadoche family, led by matriarch Ligaya Piadoche or “Nanay Gay”, started distributing food packs to healthcare workers in the UST hospital. Shortly after, they shared food packs to 500 homeless people in Manila. They have since handed out over 12,000 relief goods and pre-packed meals to healthcare workers, barangay officials, drivers, police officers, locally stranded individuals (LSIs), and indigent people.
Even though their business was also hit by the pandemic, the Piadoches consider the HT food drive their way of giving thanks to the community that has supported them for 14 years. Heaven’s Touch has always been a go-to eatery for many UST students, who love their delicious and affordable homecooked silog meals, lechon kawali, pancit Malabon, and siomai.
